About Interporto Toscano Amerigo Vespucci S.p.A.
The company Interporto Toscano Amerigo Vespucci S.p.A. (also referred to as the “Interporto Toscano” o “ITAV”) plays a role of primary importance in the management of logistical flows within the Port of Livorno and in the development of infrastructure connecting the port area to major national and international connections.
The main strategic development activities are:
Increasing rail connections to major national hubs
Constructing new opportunities in industry by creating favourable conditions for business attractiveness and increased employment
Developing the central role of the Interporto as a dry dock area serving the Tuscan Port System
Building facilities using energy from renewable sources
Handling the environmental impact and landscape equilibrium
Retro Porto – Just 5 Kilometres From the Port of Livorno
The short distance separating the dry dock from the Port of Livorno earned it the name Retro Porto. This allows ITAV to play a strategic role in the transition to more sustainable economic, mobility and logistics development models, facilitating the shift from road to rail and sea transport modes.

Our Community
We recognise the value and importance, for our present and our future, of the companies established in our areas by committing to the development of quality services dedicated to the Interporto Vespucci Community.
Before 1987
As the place name suggests, the Piana di Guasticce was a large wetland plain located just behind the Port of Livorno. Flooded for most of the year, it was unsuitable for agricultural activities.
1987
The company Interporto Toscano Amerigo Vespucci S.p.A. arose from a public partnership.
1987
1995
The first surveys, actually taken on a boat, immediately revealed the inconsistency of the soils. Up to the end of 1995, field tests, research and experimentation activities were conducted by various engineering firms of national and international importance in order to determine the most effective reclamation operations for this area.
1995
1997
Firstly, a huge drainage project was implemented for the entire Guasticce zone, even beyond the area strictly coinciding with the perimeter of the Interporto. The low waters were directed towards a large drainage system, whilst the high waters were dammed and subsequently directed towards alternative routes.
1997
2000
It was only after hydrogeological safety measures had been put in place that backfilling operations were possible, to a depth of about two metres, in order to bring the ground level in line with the project, operations that were necessary for the actual construction of the Interporto platform.
The backfill material was initially sourced from quarries in the surrounding areas and in the lower Maremma. Later on, thanks to an agreement with Rete Ferroviaria Italiana S.p.A. and the Superintendency of the Region of Tuscany, excavated soil from the worksite for the high-speed rail link in the Apennine Tunnels was brought in through the very first Florence-Guasticce rail link.
2000
Early 2000s
Throughout the 2000s
Interporto Toscano proceeded with the construction of the remaining infrastructure, such as the asphalt roads (11 kilometres), water pipes (15 kilometres), electricity lines (400 kilometres), 14 MV-LV transformer stations, as well as other offices and warehouses. During this period, ITAV carried out real estate construction and sales activities.
2002 - 2012
2002
The Unione Interporti Riuniti (U.I.R.) S.p.A. was founded, working to promote and develop intermodality.
2009
