The safety systems in place

The Interporto Toscano Amerigo Vespucci is a high-tech logistics platform that can be accessed via two gateways, the OVEST (WEST) and EST (EAST). The operations centre for security control is located at the OVEST gate and refers to the CED (Centro Elaborazione Dati or, Data Processing Centre). This computer system allows the security corps to monitor the entire perimeter of the Interporto, enabling them to detect at any time any anomalies or break-ins by third parties to then alert the appropriate authorities according to the type of issue occurring, in line with certain planned procedures.

The Interporto gates are monitored by qualified personnel who grant access to the area for both the logistics sector and employees.

Access through the gates is supported by special computer technology that enables the automatic management of a high flow of transits, meaning staff only have to check authorisations occasionally, such as for those without any automatic form of access.

Know-how Acquired in the Development of European and National Projects

Over the years, the acquisition and integration of IT technology with the information systems in the Interporto area have rendered it possible to structure a timely system for monitoring and capturing transits at the Interporto gates.

Video Surveillance System

The video surveillance system is based on the combined action of several visual surveillance devices, such as:
  • Cameras monitoring the perimeter
  • Environmental cameras
  • OCR cameras
All images captured by these devices are fed via a fibre optic connection into the Data Processing Centre infrastructure and monitored from the control room located at the Ovest gate.

Gate Control

The Ovest (West) and Est (East) access gates consist of three entry lanes and three exit lanes, managed electronically through a dual Manned-Automatic mode of operation.

The MANNED mode (Monday–Friday from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am and around the clock on Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays) involves the presence of an operator to inhibit or permit access to unauthorised vehicles or vehicles prohibited from entering after violating the Interporto traffic regulations.

The AUTOMATIC mode (Monday–Friday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm) does not require the presence of an operator at the gate, as the management software monitors transits by acquiring information on the number plate of the vehicles transited.

Computerised Transit Monitoring

The acquisition of data at the Interporto gates began in 2010, the year in which the Interporto was lead partner in a number of European and Italian projects (MAITES and Mos4Mos) for the implementation of an automated access and transit tracking system based on RFID (Radio-Frequency IDentification) technology.
